Finding Your Signature Scent: A Guide to Choosing a Candle Fragrance

Scent is the fastest route to memory and mood in the whole house — long before you notice a candle burning, you notice how a room feels. Choosing a fragrance can feel like guesswork, so here's a simple way to think about it, whether you're buying for yourself or picking a gift.

Start with a family, not a single note

Most fragrances fall into a few broad families, and it's usually easier to pick a family first, then narrow down from there:

  • Citrus & fresh — bright, zesty, energising. Good for kitchens, hallways, and mornings.
  • Floral — soft and romantic, without tipping into heavy. Good for bedrooms and bathrooms.
  • Warm & spiced — cosy, comforting, a bit indulgent. Good for evenings and colder months.
  • Woody & earthy — grounding and calm. Good for living rooms and studies.

If you're not sure where to start, think about the room you're buying for rather than the season — a candle earns its keep when it suits the space it lives in.

Match the scent to the moment

A candle for background ambience while you cook wants to be lighter than one for a long soak in the bath. As a rough guide: fresher, citrus-led scents work well for daytime and busy rooms, while warmer, deeper scents come into their own in the evening, when you want a room to feel slower.

Let a scent become "yours"

Signature scents aren't really chosen — they're noticed, usually after a candle's been burning in the background a few times and you realise you look forward to it. If a scent stops you in your tracks the first time you smell it, that's usually a good sign it'll wear well over time rather than fade into the background.

Rotating through the seasons

You don't have to commit to one scent all year. A lot of our customers keep a lighter, fresher candle on rotation for spring and summer, and switch to something warmer as the evenings draw in — it's a small thing, but it does change how a room feels.

Still not sure?

Wax melt sets are the easiest way to try a handful of scents without committing to a full candle each time — a good option if you want to find your favourite before buying a larger size. And if you're ever stuck between two, get in touch: we're always happy to talk you through it.
